Barbados - Part 1

Mary Ann and I have always had a love of Barbados.  We spent our honeymoon here 31 years ago and love to come back every chance we get.

Thirty one years ago, we stayed at a small hotel called The Crane located at Crane Beach on the east side of the island.  It was built in the 1800's high on coral cliffs, and was operated as a hotel with about 18 hotel rooms.  The Crane has long had a reputation as one of the top 10 beaches in the world.  You can see why.

Being on the east side of the island (the Atlantic side), and with the prevailing winds coming off the ocean, the water is much rougher than the west side (the Caribbean side).  This adds to the charm of the hotel.

Thirty one years ago, The Crane was one of only a few hotel properties on the east side of the island. Over the last few years, The Crane has grown into a condominium development with several hundred high-end condominium units.  The focus of the development is centered around the original hotel, pool and restaurant, although we felt it has lost some of its charm.

The pool and restaurant built on the coral cliffs are as they were 31 years ago.

The pool is one of the most iconic images in Barbados.  Find any fashion photography shot in Barbados, and chances are it was shot at The Crane.

Next time you see an image of this pool, you will know exactly where it as shot...

Another property on the east side of the island was Sam Lord's Castle, also operated as a hotel.  As I recall, this castle was built in the 1700's by pirates, who hung lanterns in the coconut trees to lure ships onto the reefs.  Once the ships wrecked on the reefs, the pirates would plunder any goods being shipped.  We visited the hotel 31 years ago, and I recall that the hotel was beautiful and the grounds were immaculately manicured.

Unfortunately, the hotel burned down about 10 years ago and the property is now abandoned.  Many of you know that I love to photograph abandoned buildings, so this was a highlight of the trip for me.

Sadly, any other homes or businesses in the area were abandoned as well.

It is unfortunate that no one has rebuilt this property...

Stay tuned for more Barbados adventures...
